How do you prevent your nail polish from peeling off when you put on a manicure strip?

I recently started doing nail art where you paint a layer, let it dry, put on the manicure nail strips to make a pattern, and then paint over the pattern with a contrasting color. Problem is when I lift off the strips, the first color peels off with it. How do I stop this from happening?How do you prevent your nail polish from peeling off when you put on a manicure strip?
i always put on a clear coat after the first layer
